dragonfly memory

Posted: 11/16/2017 in house of blues, house of change, house of strangers

you said that dragonflies only live a day.

that’s bullshit.

they just can’t remember

who they were yesterday

or what they had for breakfast.

when you’ve got legs that long

life is an hour by hour thing–

when you’ve got wings that wide

here comes everybody, with nets and pins.

you said that dragonflies only live a day.

that’s bullshit.

it’s just

they can’t for the life of them remember how they got here,

how to act,

who they can trust,

or what the fuck to do now.

  1. Rosemary Nissen-Wade says:

Excruciating! (I mean that as a compliment.) And a brilliant, powerful embodiment of metaphor; almost TOO real.

  2. Vivian Zems says:

A very witty take on the prompt- Love it!😊

  3. hedgewitch says:

Coal kills on another one–pinning a heart to the wall, as usual. I can definitely relate.

  4. Splat, I think the dragonfly has been swatted. I love it!

  5. Sherry Marr says:

And they’re not the only ones. I especially resonate with their wings being that wide and along comes everyone with nets and pins. Life is dangerous for dragonflies and human hearts.

  6. sanaarizvi says:

Eek!πŸ’˜ I absolutely love, love, love it!πŸ’˜ *swooooon*

  7. retirement got you like…wtf? maybe (just maybe) i’m reading the dead dragonfly parts all wrong, as they stare at me with those compound eyes out from between the giant double spaces you’ve given them to hide in here. i’m assuming you still get a kick out of penning, yes? it’s a gift you have and a gift for us that you share. Love your poetry

  8. oldegg says:

Yes this is a great laugh, however what a briliant defence system to outwit predators.

  9. I read this as a metaphor for many people, especially those with dementia who are institutionalized. What is there to remember. It is the same over and over. Well crafted.

  10. Sioux says:

Shay–Is there an insect you could NOT write an inspiring poem about? Seriously.

  11. This is hysterical!
