Two Dogs

Posted: 04/28/2015 in house of blues, house of crazy, house of memory

i got two dogs.

one’s nice, one ain’t.

them two’s my babies–

called skillet and shotgun.

come springtime,

if the road weren’t muddy, sometimes i wouldn’t know where i’d been.

there’s my tracks, and theirs, one to either side.

skillet got burrs,

shotgun caught a pellet,

and my dress was torn, but i can’t recall how.

best as i can guess,

it was the same old song–

should’ve left the mean one home,

but one gets lonesome without the other,

so i turn ’em both loose

when the moon is full,

and the usual cautions don’t catch hold.

  1. Mama Zen says:

    I adore that last line.

  2. Timoteo says:

“if the road weren’t muddy, I wouldn’t know where I’d been” That’s DEEP!

  3. hedgewitch says:

Ha! This pretends to be all folksy and downhome, but like so much of coal’s downhome, it;s full of reality and self-knowledge. I’d like to keep the mean one tied up, too, but she just chews through the chain and breaks her teeth.

  4. Sanaa says:

    This is so beautiful & intense…! 😀

  5. dani says:

so good to have you back writing, Coal! don’t stay gone so long, ‘kay?

  6. Oh those two dogs sounds like the two-headed dog from Roky Erickson..

  7. We all have two dogs inside of us, as well as beside us. I love the voice and the mud and the burrs.

  8. M says:

ain’t no dog mean. just, some folks are stupid, and them dogs got short patience ~

  9. Snakypoet (Rosemary Nissen-Wade) says:

Love it, love it, love it – particularly the last three lines.

  10. Kim Nelson says:

The usual cautions don’t catch hold… your diction, dialect and phrasing feel like a well acted stage-play. Clean, clear write.

  11. Kerry O'Connor says:

    Love it!

  12. “My dress was torn,” but she can’t quite recollect how, brilliant! And a powerful ending: “so i turn ’em both loose/when the moon is full/and the usual cautions don’t catch hold.” Love the colloquialisms, the voice. Perfect, babe! Amy

  13. Jim says:

A nice full moon tonight, FB, time to go with the dogs again?
This was wonderful reading, I walked the mud along with you, me and my beagle, Adi dog.

  14. This made me smile. Loved it

  15. Which dog is bigger? That’s the real question.
