people talk

people talk

and people say

that love,

oh love,

is sure enough a beautiful thing.

people talk

but don’t think,

and when it comes to love

oh love,

they don’t know a goddam thing.

love will give

but it don’t give for free…

and what it does

it does

without mercy–

love will change you

and you won’t even see

that what it does, it does merciless–

merciless-

ly.

  1. hedgewitch says:

People talk, but it don’t mean a thing–‘believe half of what you see and none of what you hear,’ in the words of the philosopher Marvin Gaye. Great clip also–that woman’s vocal range and depth is amazing.

  2. Herotomost says:

Damnation, on both the clip and the poem. Lyrics unfolding and gaining traction, that could be an entire song…..hella good.

  3. Mercilessly indeed. Sing it, Coal Black!

  4. I’m hearing the blues in this one…great job!!

  5. Brendan says:

Coal can sing coz the night and rain and lost highways and wastrel love are the blue notes inside the wandering minstrel’s voice. Writing it here with the music so silently intact is wonderful, but it may less the meter of song than gnosis of the blues that makes this work. Love is a mighty daimon — Sappho knew and feared it well. We pray for elephants, but woe to the lucky ones, huh. – Brendan

  6. Heaven says:

I believe love changes you…for better or mercilessly ~

    Happy Saturday ~

  7. Marian says:

    you got it beautiful
    beautiful
    beauti ful

  8. This sounds just like Joan too 🙂

  9. Mama Zen says:

    I know that’s right!

  10. Ruth says:

love your song (reads like one) – if nothing else, love changes us…

  11. lolamouse says:

I could hear Joan singing your lyrics.

  12. Well done. I especially like “people talk but don’t think, and when it comes to love oh love, they don’t know a goddam thing.” This could sure enough be a song.

  13. dani says:

aren’t all of your poems your heart’s songs, coal? maybe everyone’s poetry is, but your heart is right there, in ever word, in the spaces between and in my heart when i read them.

  14. ella says:

    Wonderful and people don’t think….
I agree this could be a song!
