run

Posted: 12/25/2011 in house of blues, house of women

when i was little

i would play until the sun was gone,

and then i’d hear something

behind me comin on.

i told myself then,

run, girl,

run for your life;

run fast and never look back…

run for your life.

~

the same hand that you reach for

can be the one that knocks you down

and when you can’t breathe

that ain’t love

that ain’t love.

just when i think it’ll all be all right,

that’s when i feel something

right behind me comin on.

i tell myself then,

run, girl,

run for your life;

run fast and never look back…

don’t blink once

and don’t think twice,

girl, run,

run for your life.

This must be my whole problem–i can’t run worth a flip. Spooky and unsettled feel to this–but that’s par for the course with coal.

  2. Mama Zen says:

I agree with Hedge; this is unsettling.

  3. Self-preservation is so instinctive that one may feel the presence of danger on a cognitive level.. and run to avoid it. Isn’t love, or placing yourself in the hands of one you love, in fact counter-instinctive since we place ourselves in emotional danger and fight the urge to run for our lives?

  4. Sharon Weir says:

I loved this poem. I felt my heart racing, running for my own life. Very successful.

  5. Heaven says:

I feel like I was running in my nightmare..Nice one ~

  6. I can feel this on a visceral level, even though my fears were always imaginary. Very well done!

  7. a great ominous feel to this piece – the running – the subconscious and visceral elements – the idea of darkness – in the sun gone and the blinking – the repetition was well executed too and added to the effect! this is very apt – “the same hand that you reach for
can be the one that knocks you down” – the nature of heart-things – great job!!

    “that ain’t love
    that ain’t love”

    this one gave me shivers!

Compelling and unsettling, sad as well. I like the rhythm and repetition that keeps it flowing.

‘House Of Hope’ … in perfect sync with the ominous feel of your poem. Happy New Year Shay.

kinda scary…what happens when you can run no more…nicely played shay….

  14. Janet says:

Dark, yet soulful. Did you write music for it too?

  15. lolamouse says:

Intense. “the same hand that you reach for can be the one that knocks you down.” That’s one hard lesson to learn.
