black car

Posted: 07/04/2011 in house of change

sun don’t care

where the black car go,

black car comin

comin real slow.

road ain’t right

ruts run deep,

whoever in the black car

always gonna sleep.

sun don’t care

if you break down and cry,

sister saw an owl

means somebody gonna die.

the black car sway

and the engine moan

whoever in the black car

never goin’ home.

There is a cemetery not far from me with a rutted dirt and gravel road that leads way back into it. You almost can’t see the entrance at the main road. When you get there, all the trees are old, and hardly anybody is ever back there. But just once in a while, comes a black car. So I wrote about one. For Form Monday–The Blues.

I hear this in a capella, hoarse whiskey voice throating the spectral passage of the black car as the delivery van of strange fruit, a la Billie Holiday. I see that figure standing atop the Orange County, FL, courthouse, singing away while the jury begins their deliberations of the Casey Anthony trial.

Beautiful, sad, and frightening. We all fear the black car. Thank you, Shay.

  3. Joe Hesch says:

Something old and real about this piece, like it could have come from The Delta from a time early in the last century. Very cool.

  4. brenda w says:

Excellent blues feel…rhythm moves the reader through the piece. I like the owl bit.

  5. lolamouse says:

Coal Black’s House O Blues be rockin’ today.

  6. Gay says:

Standin’ at the crossroads watchin’ that black car crawlin down a dirt and gravel road and knowin’ each of our bodies will cross that way while our souls join the nightbirds and fly away. It’s all here and it’s a blues song for sure. I hear it playing guitar, piano and bass.

  7. zongrik says:

Now this is blues. Cool. Nice rhythm. I don’t hear this a capella, but I do hear this only with acoustic instruments, very subtle, maybe just one instrument, no drums. Even just a harmonica would be fine. But I think, guitar is better.

  8. Jerry says:

Wow, that was fun and the cadence…awesome. I like. I like.

  9. dani says:

i knew you’d do the blues up right! love it! ♥

  10. hedgewitch says:

This reminds me of a lot of stuff-old ballads, crows, women with black veils and horses with black plumes—that black car has done a lot of miles.
