food came first,

so the bill weren’t paid.

spring wouldn’t come,

so the space heater stayed.

life burns up

right quick or by little;

angels wouldn’t help her

so she kissed the devil.

there are freeway ramps

everywhere.

all over the country,

wherever you are,

there is a way out.

it is just these nails through our cuffs that keep us in place.

it is just these nails through our feet that keep us so holy.

you don’t have to stay sober

and you don’t have to stay here.

you don’t have to be nice.

you just need pavement, a tank of gas,

and a way not to think about

to what and to whom you didn’t say goodbye.

soon

soon, i’ll

clear my head,

write a new song,

kick the raccoons

out of the shed…

soon, i’ll

do the dishes,

meet someone sane,

but for now i’ll just sit here

and watch

the rain.

ride

grand dad had a 1958 plymouth

with a push button automatic.

mama kep her daddy’s grave nice at the cemetery

and his car in the garage for years.

i recall

i could lay right down across the back seat–

kick my legs, hit nothin…

that car were bigger than a gymnasium.

when i die,

whether devils or angels take me,

god gotta send them in a 1958 plymouth

with a push button automatic

and tail fins.
